People often say to us "Why does that green bit cover the text on your website?", to which we reply "It represents a bookmark, and that's what bookmarks do", but actually we thought it would be more fun to be slightly annoying and explain all of this, than to actually fix it. We're like that.

Who We Are (This Week)

A small bunch of people working on stuff for the Interval Between Now and Later

Meanwhile is a people and computers company. We build the software that makes businesses run smoother, customers happier, and founders marginally less stressed about that one task they keep putting off.

That's the simple version.

The complicated version is that we're also an experiment in whether you can run a business that openly acknowledges the absurdity of running a business. We sell marketing tools. We automate commerce while questioning the premises of capitalism. We make money in order to fund projects that have nothing to do with making money.

This is either very clever or extremely stupid. We'll let you know which one when we find out.

The Team

We're small. Deliberately. Larger teams require more coordination, more meetings, more decisions about whose turn it is to buy coffee. We have chosen to avoid most of this by simply having fewer people.
The humans involved have backgrounds in technology, policy, communications, and existential confusion about modern life. We work from Melbourne, mostly, though "from" is doing a lot of work in that sentence given we're all remote and time is a construct.

We believe technology should serve people, not the other way around. We think fascism is bad, humans are mostly trying their best, and the future is worth showing up for. These shouldn't be controversial positions, but here we are.

Why "meanwhile"?

Because we're doing this in the meantime. While we wait for the bigger things to become possible. While the world figures itself out. While we figure ourselves out.

People used to work eight hours, commute two hours, sleep six hours, and spend the remaining eight on "life admin." This was considered normal. We're not sure it was ever a good idea, but we're definitely sure we'd like to spend less time on the tedious parts.

Meanwhile, there are bills to pay. Meanwhile, there's work to be done. Meanwhile, we can do that work in a way that doesn't make us want to scream into the void. (Often. Sometimes we still scream. The void is patient.)
